Taiwan fruit and energy drinks tainted with DEHP and DINP

Three brands of a Taiwanese food product are being removed from the Malaysian shelves here for containing carcinogens, while the Health Ministry is testing various other brands from the country. The three brands are Uni-Presiden Enterprise Corp, Country House Inc and Young Energy Resources Co Ltd. The affected products are:

1. Uni-President Asparagus Juice from Uni-Presiden Enterprise Corp, Taiwan.

2. Sunkist Lemon Juice, Sunkist Lemon Juice Drink with Aloe Vera Pulp, Sunkist Orange Juice and Sunkist Orange Juice Drink from Country House Inc, Taiwan.

3. Speed Sports Drink, Speed Sports Drinkg (Lemon Flavor) and Dong Nung 1000 Sports Drink from Young Energy Resources Co Ltd, Taiwan.

The banned items comprise fruit and energy drinks. The products being tested for possible traces of carcinogens - di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) include fruit juices, jellies, jams, yoghurts and sports drinks.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the ministry had been informed by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that three brands of food products were tainted with carcinogens.

He said DEHP and DINP were usually used in the production of plastic to make it more flexible.

“Both (chemicals) are added to a clouding agent (a food additive) to reduce food production costs,'' he said in a statement yesterday.

Liow said that following media reports on the tainted food products on May 25, the ministry contacted the importers concerned to make them immediately recall their items that were already in the local market.

“The public need not worry about the safety of food imported from Taiwan as safeguards are in place to inspect the products.

“Those who have already bought the products concerned are advised not to consume them,'' he added.

The minister warned that those found guilty of importing, storing, producing, distributing or selling the tainted products could be charged under Section 13 (1) of the Food Act 1983 and faced up to 10 years in jail, a fine of not more than RM100,000, or both.

Food Safety and Quality Division (FSQ) Putrajaya assistant director Leong Siew Hong said the unit was also sampling other Taiwanese food products from various outlets, including supermarkets and sundry shops, for traces of DEHP and DINP.

“These brands are available in most hypermarkets, especially in the central city areas,” he said.

“So far, we have taken 16 product samples for testing. We should be able to confirm within two days if the items are tainted.

“If they are, the items will be removed from the shelves and legal action will be taken against the companies responsible.” For details, call the FSQ or ministry at 03-88833652/3653 or visit http://moh.gov.my or http://fsq.moh.gov.my

Top 10 Most Vulnerable Apps

Internet security company Bit9 has ranked the year's most vulnerable apps, based on the vulnerability database developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The applications found on this year's list were ranked by the number of "high severity" vulnerabilities reported. The list includes some of the most popular Web browsers and desktop software applications. Apple and Adobe, for example, have the most products on this year's list, according to Bit9.

Harry Sverdlove, CTO of Bit9, issued the following warning along with the company's official report: "The reality is every enterprise, including our own, is likely using at least one of the applications, and unpatched vulnerabilities are often used as the access point for the targeted enterprise attacks making headlines these days." Bit9 advises consumers that the best way to eliminate these vulnerabilities is by performing regular maintenance and patching exploits when necessary.

Fake Blood Nest Can Cause Cancer

TWO local bird’s nest manufacturers from Malaysia have been ordered to cease operations for adding nitrates from artificial red colouring to produce “blood nest”, Chinese dailies reported.

Read also Beware of Fake Bird Nest

Sin Chew Daily quoted Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Chua Tee Yong as saying that their unethical practice was discovered after the ministry received complaints from China importers.

Chua said the “fake blood nest” can cause cancer and the ministry has started investigations.

He also told the daily in an interview that he had sent some of the “blood nest” in his home for testing.

He was shocked to receive a report saying that the “blood nest” given as a gift by his friends also contained nitrates.

Chua urged the public to be extra careful when purchasing “blood nest”.

How to test nitrate in bird nest

“Consumers must smell the bird’s nest when they purchase the product.

“If it has a urine smell and the colour of the birds’ nest is very even, there must be something wrong,” he added.

Pertussis Outbreak In California Killed 10 Infants

In 2009, Swine Flu was a taboo word in medical term. In 2010, Pertussis could be next taboo term. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, has claimed the 10th victim in California, in what health officials are calling the worst outbreak in 60 years. So parents, take good care of your tots.

Read also Swine Flu Outbreak of 2009

Since the beginning of the year, 5,978 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of the disease have been reported in California.

All of the deaths occurred in infants under the age of 3 months, says Michael Sicilia, a spokesman for the California Department of Public Health. Nine were younger than 8 weeks old, which means they were too young to have been vaccinated against this highly contagious bacterial disease.

"This is a preventable disease," says Sicilia, because there is a vaccine for whooping cough to protect those coming in contact with infants, and thereby protect the infants.

However, some parents are choosing to not vaccinate their children. In other cases, previously vaccinated children and adults may have lost their immunity because the vaccine has worn off.

The vaccine "does not protect you for life," explains Alison Patti, a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sicilia says California Health Department epidemiologists estimate 50 percent of the children who have gotten sick were infected by their parents or caregivers.

According to the recommended vaccine schedule for infants, newborns don't get their first pertussis vaccine until they are 2 months old, leaving them vulnerable to infection until then if the people surrounding them are infected.

"That's why the real important message is -- whether it's a mom, dad, sibling, grandfather or grandmother that comes in contact with these really young babies -- all the close contacts, including the health care professionals, need to vaccinated," says Patti. It's called the "cocooning strategy," where the newborns are protected because the older people around them have been vaccinated and protected from pertussis, and therefore won't pass it on to little babies.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria that can lead to severe upper respiratory infections. The bacteria is spread in tiny droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Initial symptoms are very similar to a cold, but a week or two later, a violent cough develops.

"If you've ever seen a child with pertussis, you won't forget it" -- that's how the American Academy of Pediatrics explains what whooping cough is on its website. The academy says a child with the disease coughs so hard and so often "until the air is gone from his/her lungs and he/she is forced to inhale with the loud 'whooping' sound that gives the disease its nickname."

The cough can last for weeks and children can cough so hard and rapidly, that blood vessels can burst and they have difficulty eating, drinking and breathing. According to the CDC, "about 1 in 5 infants with pertussis get pneumonia, and about 1 in 100 will have convulsions. In rare cases (1 in 100), pertussis can be deadly, especially in infants."

Parents and doctors can often miss the initial symptoms of pertussis in the youngest patients because they often do not have the characteristic cough with a "whoop" says Patti.

According to the National Institutes of Health, "the whoop noise is rare in patients under 6 months and in adults."

That's why parents need to be alert to symptoms in themselves as well as their children, says Patti. If there's a prolonged pause in breathing or they have trouble breathing, that's an important sign and parents should seek medical attention immediately, she explains.

"It's important to go to the doctor early on," says Patti because, "antibiotics don't help you later."

Adults usually don't have the "whoop" cough, so they may not think they have pertussis. Patti recommends if someone has a cough that doesn't go away, they should get tested for pertussis.

Sicilia points out that the pertussis vaccine isn't perfect and its protection wanes after about five years.

Health officials are urging everyone who hasn't had a pertussis vaccine in the past five years or -- doesn't remember if they had one -- to get the shot.

Energy drink Four Loko could be dangerous

Blogger: How People Make Money Blogging From Home In Malaysia - Create PostNot all energy drinks are suitable for you. Some of the cases of excessive intoxication were due to drinking energy drink. It could seriously compromise your health.

FoxNews.com reported that college students were hospitalized after downing alcoholic energy drink identified as Four Loko.

An alcohol-laced energy drink equivalent to at least three beers, a can of Red Bull and a shot of espresso has prompted a New Jersey college to ban the drink after nearly two dozen students were hospitalized for alcohol intoxication.

Since the beginning of the fall semester, officials at Ramapo College in Mahwah have seen 23 cases of students being hospitalized for excessive drinking, with a handful of them being tied to the energy drink Four Loko, also known as "blackout in a can."

Report suggests that Four Loko contained high alcohol content with a stimulant like caffeine. Experts are saying that caffeine reduces the drowsy feeling of being intoxicated, so people tend to drink more. Fatigue is your body’s way of telling you it’s had enough, so fooling the body with stimulants creates the perfect scenario for acute alcohol poisoning and potentially death.

The bottom line on the alcohol energy drink is it gets you very drunk, very quick. And Four Loko could be a dangerous substance, especially if you did not control your intake.

Nuffnang Advertisers Losing Money From Click Fraud

Nuffnang Cost-Per-Click (CPC) campaigns, which pay bloggers based on the number of clicks generated on the ads is taking hit from click fraudsters. What is my take on this? No difference because my blogs seldom get awarded with their campaigns.

That's because my blog traffic majority are from the North America. And even if Nuffnang decided to give me some campaigns, it be related to cigarettes and alcohols, since their Muslim members would reject those kind of ads campaign.

Nuffnang, in fact should scrutinize their member's blogs. I mean, some bloggers have boasted to receive hundreds of Ringgit from Nuffnang yet their blogs are pretty much a personal rambling, devoid of real issues and contents. The only way for low ranking blogs to earn lots of money is from unusual activities.

According to Nuffang's broadcast mail, certain groups have been engaging in the CPC click fraud, which is defined as clicking on CPC advertisements intentionally just to generate earnings for a blog's owner. While some of you may just be anxious about earning some side income from displaying the banner ads, but do note that this is in fact a violation of Nuffnang Terms & Conditions under Section 6.

Among some of the actions which constitute click fraud are;
- clicking on other bloggers' ads and leaving a comment behind asking/hinting to the owner to click on their ads back
- asking for blog visitors' help to click on the ads
- registering a large number of blogs and clicking on ads on each of them
- repeatedly switching to a different IP to click on own ads

VBMania - New email worm outbreak

Computer security firms have issued warnings over a computer virus that arrives by email offering downloads of "free sex movies" or documents.

McAfee Labs said the "Here you have" virus, which attacks users of computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system, takes its name from the subject line in the emails sent to unsuspecting recipients.

The emails provide a link to a website purporting to offer shared PDF documents or movie files but which actually executes the virus when clicked upon.

Once activated, the worm attempts to send the email on to all of the contacts in a recipient's address book, McAfee said.

In addition, it attempts to disable security programs hosted by a recipient's machine.

Kaspersky, another security firm, raised its threat level over the virus which it called "VBMania".

VBMania is also formally known as W32.Imsolk.A@mm.

"The worm is pretty active, and currently sending out significant amounts of mail," it said.

According to Fox News, the virus took down servers at US space agency NASA and companies such as cable giant Comcast late last week.

Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a - First Android Trojan

Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a - First Android TrojanA local outbreak of a mobile trojan in Russia has shown us something new: The Android operating system might need an antivirus.

The malware was detected by security firm Kaspersky, who confirmed the file is named “Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a” and is downloaded as a typical .APK Android app. The company stated this is the first known Android-specific trojan.

The malware works by posing as a media player app. Once the app is installed on the mobile device, the trojan begins to send SMS messages to premium rate numbers without the device owner’s knowledge. Since the trojan’s creators are usually the ones on the other end of those premium numbers, they end up profiting from the scam.

This SMS-based type of malware is currently one of the most common forms of mobile viruses. SMS trojans have been around for years on mobile phones, even predating the smartphones we all know and love. The first mobile SMS virus appeared in 2004, and the first-ever Android malware (isolated incidents of spyware) popped up in 2009.

Kaspersky Lab is currently working on Android-specific antivirus technologies; the company plans to release Kaspersky Mobile Security for Android early next year. Other antivirus apps are available in the Android Market; in the past, such applications were thought unnecessary.

However, as this platform continues to experience meteoric growth, even outselling iPhones in the first half of this year, more criminals will be attracted to the money-making capabilities of Android viruses. We hope that Google and device carriers and manufacturers will think about security and antivirus options when planning on-board apps for future OS updates.

The trojan “media player” that’s causing concern today isn’t available in the Android Market. Rather, it is “being distributed from a malicious website,” according to Kaspersky researcher Denis Maslennikov. “You have to click it manually, there is no drive-by download. If you try to install it, the smartphone will ask you to grant permission for the application to send SMS messages, read or delete data from SD and collect the data about the phone and phone ID.”

As always, be aware of what you download, especially if you’re downloading apps outside the Android Market. Kapersky recommends you pay particular attention to the “permission slip” list of hardware or software an application accesses. These lists are available for every Market and non-Market Android app. If the app needs to make premium-rate SMS or phone calls, you might want to think twice before downloading and installing it.
