Watch out for Google Database or Google Pedia

Google has acquired Metaweb, a company that maintains an open database of things in the world. And I thought it was Google who know a lot of things in the world.

Metaweb’s kept free and open database of over 12 million things, including movies, books, TV shows, celebrities, locations, companies and more in their Freebase datamines. Google and Metaweb plan to maintain Freebase as a free and open database for the world.

Anyone can contribute data to Freebase, and you can also build your own schema in a Base if Freebase does not yet have schema for a subject you're interested in. Well, this sound like a cloned Wikipedia.

Knowing Google, they are up to something. Perhaps Google Database? That will put them in the same league as Oracle, IBM DB2, IBM Informix, Microsoft SQL, Sybase and MySQL.
