Famous Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower, a building that has become a symbol of China’s financial centre, caught fire early on Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency.Flames could be seen near the large television antenna at the top of the 468m tower, but firefighters appeared to have the fire under control as of 3:30 a.m. local time.
There were no casualties or damage to the construction of the tower reported in the 2am incident.
Local police said that before the fire, there was thunder, which is believed, could have triggered the fire.
Firefighters immediately responded to the fire and extinguished it in more than an hour.
The tower is in the city’s financial center, Lujiazui, in Pudong district, by the side of Huangpu River.
The Oriental Pearl Tower is a TV tower in Shanghai, and is located at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong district, by the side of Huangpu River, opposite The Bund of Shanghai.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Shanghai will host the 2010 World Expo from May 1 until October.
